11 March 2004 No. 7
11 Mar 2004
From the Acting Head of School
by: Dr André van Zyl

Dear Parents,

Parents, visitors and students at St Paul's School are advised that construction sites in and around the School are strictly out of bounds and are restricted areas. Only people who are authorized to enter these sites on official business may do so. Please adhere to the signage at these sites.

The 'educational relationship' at St Paul's School can be described as the relationship between the educator and the student. The nature of this educational relationship is essentially founded in the following statements:
· The extent of mutual acceptance and trust;
· A relationship of authority;
· A relationship of knowing;
· A dialogic (communicative) relationship.

The positive (healthy) or negative (unhealthy) nature of the educational relationship and the pedagogical atmosphere will awaken in the student a basic attitude of trust or anxiety. We promote a positive relationship between staff and students; one where trust and mutual respect play significant roles in the educational development of the student.

Education at St Paul's is a practical action through which the educator fosters the statements made above within the classroom. Education takes place especially in the School and home, but can occur anywhere where a student as the assistance seeking person is helped by another to master knowledge, skills or attitudes. It is our mission at St Paul's School to develop these characteristics in a specific and unique way.

Two of our Year 10 students, Alison Kenny and Ashleigh Taylor have been selected to be part of the Nga Tawa Student Exchange Program in New Zealand in Term 2. This is a new program which places the student in precisely the educational situations and settings as described above. We congratulate and wish them well and believe that they will be true ambassadors for St Paul's School.

Our welcome is extended to Mr Stathey Tsigounis as a Maths and Computer Studies teacher in the Senior School until the end of the year.

We also wish Margaret Goddard a speedy recovery during her leave and assure her that our thoughts and prayers are with her constantly.

Dr Andrč W van Zyl
Acting Head of School

SPLAT: St Paul's - Live and Terrific
Believe it or not, we are up to SPLAT #7! SPLAT will be held in the Chapel of St Paul on Sunday 21 March at 6.00pm. The theme is "Get a Wriggle on" and we'll be looking at being bold and confident in our faith.

SPLAT is open to everyone. Students from Years 7-12 have been working hard on drama and dance to suit the theme and our guest speaker, Daniel Lynam, is an old boy of St Paul's.

We look forward to celebrating God's great love and creative spirit with you on the 21 March!

First Communion Classes
Just an early reminder that classes will begin in term 2 in preparation for receiving Communion. First Communion is open to anyone from Year 3 and above. Expression of Interest form will be in the Link shortly. Admittance to First Communion will be held at the Family Service on Sunday 2 June.

Reflection
There are many occasions in life where we are quite simply baffled, perplexed and confused. We may not know which way to turn or even know how to respond. At life's darkest moments it is easy to tumble wearily into an ever deepening ditch, forgetful of the even easier option: to give it all over to God. "Let go and let God" someone once said to me. The reality is that while God can help us to carry our burdens, we must still live the experience and grow through and from them. Below is a Michael Leunig prayer to remind us of small surprises and goodness (from "Common Prayer Collection", Collins Dove: North Blackburn, 1993):

We give thanks for the invention of the handle.
Without it there would be many things we couldn't
hold on to. As for the things we can't hold on to
anyway, let us gracefully accept their ungraspable
nature and celebrate all things elusive, fleeting and
intangible. They mystify us and make us receptive to
truth and beauty. We celebrate and give thanks.
Amen.

Student Drivers
It is School policy that students who are appropriately licensed to drive may bring cars or motorcycles to School and must park them on School premises in the designated area, subject to the following conditions:

a) that their parents have given written consent to their driving to School and that such permission has been lodged with the Head of Senior School.

b) that the vehicle is locked upon arrival at School and is not approached or unlocked until it is time to leave for home.

c) that students hand their keys in at the Head of Senior School's Office on arrival at School (after 8.15am) and collect them before 3.45pm.

d) that students do not use their vehicle during School hours, i.e. 8.30am-3.10pm unless a written request is given to the Head of Senior School one (1) day in advance.

e) that students of no other School families are carried without the written consent of both passenger's and driver's parents being lodged with the Head of Senior School.

f) that student drivers park in the student carpark at the Attunga Street entrance.

g) that the driver drives and parks in a responsible manner at all times, particularly when in School uniform or when associated with the School.

As these guidelines form part of St Paul's School duty of care to all students, any breach of the above conditions associated with driving, or foolishness which the School perceives will endanger the safety of our students will result in the immediate and permanent removal of this privilege.

I seek your support in ensuring these guidelines are adhered.

After Hours Emergency Contact

Students can access a gold phone in the Physical Education Centre and seek assistance at the Administration Building until 4.45pm each weekday.

Parents are advised that in an emergency, after 5.00pm weekdays, they may contact the caretaker Wayne Sheriff on 0414 295 147 to get messages or assistance to their children.

Additionally, if similar circumstances arise on the weekend parents may contact the caretaker Peter Hollingworth on 0414 326 907.

Parents should reinforce with their children that if there is an urgent situation or need to contact parents 'after hours' they should contact the caretakers at their respective houses or around the School grounds. Caretakers will offer students the use of a mobile phone or assistance as required.

From the Head of Middle School
by: Mike Tucker

As the term moves towards a close, time demands and work loads increase resulting in students, parents and staff experiencing increased levels of stress. At times, this may lead to harsh words, frayed tempers and some upset students. Much of this can be avoided with a little care and consideration for others. At the times when students are under pressure to perform, they often fail to recognize that the community nature of the school is even more important to their ongoing emotional welfare.

Students need to remember that care and consideration allows a community like St Paul's to operate for the benefit of all. It is the right of every individual member of the school community to expect a safe environment, free of intimidation, harassment and bullying. As members of that community, it is the responsibility of every individual to assist in developing and maintaining a culture that values that right.

Our collective responsibility is to actively contribute to the desired school culture, one that places significant value on care and consideration for all members of the school community. An essential component of the desired school culture is communication. Student-initiated communication is essential in developing a positive school culture. This communication can be in many forms. Conversation with one of the significant adults within the school is a simple means of communication but not always suitable for some students and some situations. Students can write letters or emails to staff as a way of assisting them to understand the issues which students feel are important.

It is also essential that the quality of student-to-student interaction and communication be at its best during periods of high stress. Unfortunately, this is not the case with some Middle School students at the present time. Many of the positive aspects of close friendship groups can be damaged or undone at times like this. If students neglect to communicate with each other in a pleasant and positive fashion, friendships and trust built up over time may be lost or damaged. I urge all parents to actively support the idea of considerate and constructive communication amongst all our students. If you are aware that this is not happening, please assist us by discouraging negative conversation and discussion amongst students. Adolescent friendships are fragile and tenuous at the best of times; our students need our support to develop these friendships to a mature level.

Year 7 CBD Excursion
On Thursday 28 April, the Year 7's will be venturing into the CBD for the day. Thank you for the wonderful response to be 'shadows' and we now have enough. However, we are still looking for some more businesses to visit for a 30 minute tour. If you are able to help out, please return the form that was sent home as soon as possible or you can email Sophie O'Hara directly - s.ohara@stpauls.qld.edu.au

Parent - Teacher Interviews
As the end of the term fast approaches the Parent - Teacher Interviews begin to be organised. Please contact Mrs Julie Saunders at Frost to make an appointment to see your child's teacher. These will take place in Week Ten from Monday 29 March to Friday 2 April, before and after school. These are an important time for parents and teachers to share information about students. If through the term you need to discuss matters with the class teacher, then the best way to go about this is to make an appointment through Frost Reception. This way the matter can be given full attention.

As I walked around the school this week I felt very thankful for such a supportive parent group. There were mums and dads taking equipment across to the Phys Ed Centre for the Motor Program. Others showing up in boardies to assist with the swimming lessons. Some classes even had parents and grandparents helping with their language and maths groups. There were lots of helpers for the Year Six excursion to Australia Zoo. Thanks must also go to our Class Parent Liaison volunteers too as they do a great job in supporting the teacher's role. The list is endless, the staff of the Junior School are extremely thankful for the positive support they receive.

Important Dates
* Saturday 13 March
- OPEN DAY and SCHOLARSHIP
* Tuesday 16 March - Junior TAS Swimming at The Southport School

Help Wanted

Help Wanted - Commemorative Quilt
The Junior School is planning to make a Commemorative Quilt to coincide with 25 years of Junior School at St Paul's 1979 to 2004, incorporating all activities that make up the Junior School, from Prep at Paul's through to Year 6. This quilt when completed will be placed in the foyer of Frost Reception. There will be a presentation of the completed quilt at Con Brio 2004 in September. If anyone is interested in helping out with this project enquiries should be directed to Mrs Francesca Elliott - mum to Jessica 1G, Lachlan 6R and Fraser 8W, who has kindly offered to coordinate this project.

Do you have any unwanted fabric or notions to donate? If so, you can leave your donation at Frost Reception. It is anticipated that the patch should be no bigger or smaller than 30cm x 30cm. There are lots of ideas for the squares, so as the saying goes "many hands make light work". For further information contact Francesca Elliott on 3869 3701.

Safe School Travel

Safe Rolling
Rollerblades, rollerskates, skateboards and non-motorised scooters are classified as wheeled recreational devices and are subject to specific road rules.

These devices must not travel on a road with a dividing line or median strip, or a one-way road with more than one marked lane.

They must keep to the far left side of the local road, to the left of a path and must always give way to pedestrians and cyclists on a footpath or shared path.

While allowed to ride on a designated bicycle path, people using these devices must give way to bicycles.

Local governments have the authority to make local laws dealing with the use of wheeled recreational devices on roads and footpaths. For example, they may make a local law that prohibits the use of roller blades and skateboards on certain busy footpaths.

For further information on local laws in your area, please contact your local Council.

Bright Minds
by: PA Sullivan

Recently six Year 12 students travelled to the University of Queensland accompanied by Mr Andrew Ball and Mr Peter Smith to attend the first "Bright Minds" lecture of the year. This series of lectures aims to encourage extremely capable students towards a career in Science by allowing them to meet university academics and industry representatives from various fields. Subsequent lectures in the series will be publicised in the Link.

This first lecture featured two of the world's leading authorities on hypersonic flight. Lawrence Stephenson, Nick Funnell, Rajiv Shekhar, Lorena Winn, Andrew Lindsay and Chen-Yu Wang were thoroughly entertained by Professor Allan Paul, leader of the UQ HYSHOT Scramjet project and a spokesman from the NASA hypersonics laboratory. Considerable insight into the pros and cons of performing advanced research was gained.

Year 10 Camp
by: CT Walker

Students in Year 10 will shortly be asked to choose their camp for this year.

Camp lasts 4 days - 20 - 23 April, the week immediately following the Easter Break.

It is a mandatory part of the School curriculum.

The selection process involves each student selecting a buddy to camp with and pairs of students then opting for the camp of their choice.

If too many choose a camp, a random draw is made to eliminate excess numbers, who must then select a camp that is available.

A list below shows the camp offerings for this year. Parents and students should note that the South Passage Sailing involves an extra expense which is likely to be around $300. Mr Huth's Horse Riding camp will go Monday 19 - Thursday 22.

Apart from the Sailing group, the camp cost is included in your School fees.

A full information sheet will be distributed early next week.

Inquiries regarding the process may be directed to Mr C Walker in the PE Centre or the teacher in charge of any of the camps.

Extracts from cricket notes, School Magazine 1961 (the first year St Paul's opened). The excavation for the first turf cricket wicket at St Paul's was completed by voluntary labour - the boys, their parents and the masters all lending a hand. It was hoped to have it ready for the 1962 cricket season. As St Paul's had no cricket wicket of their own in 1961, the Headmaster of Bald Hills State School invited the boys to use their wickets for practice and competition. The first inter-form cricket match was played on the Bald Hills State School Oval on 11 March 1961. (There were only two classes, at St Paul's in the first year - Forms 1A and 1B.) St Paul's first venture into inter-school competition was a cricket match against 'Churchie' on 25 March 1961. 'Churchie' won by five runs on the first innings. In Third Term 1961, the St Paul's team was impressed with their first game on a turf wicket when they, as the youngest school in the competition, visited Ipswich Grammar, the oldest school. Ipswich Grammar won outright by five runs.

Careers

Post-school options are important for our students and families. I will soon begin organizing short meetings with all Yr12 students to discuss their post-school options. The purpose of these meetings will be to talk to students to find out how the school can best support them in finding the information and assistance they may require to make informed choices about their future.

Last week I attended a very informative presentation at QTAC regarding tertiary entry procedures and the statistics relating to entry into tertiary courses in 2004. Some of the interesting points to arise from this seminar included:
· 22,311 QLD Yr 12 students applied for tertiary entry
· 92% of QLD Yr12 applicants received an offer
· 78% of those receiving an offer accepted it

First preference by field of education - % shifts
+ 17.2 % - Architecture & Building
+ 8.7 % - Natural & Physical Sciences
-20.2% - Information Technology
- 14.6% - Agriculture & Environment

Potential student interest in particular courses can change each year which can result in a subsequent change in OP requirements for tertiary entry. In real terms, this means that students wishing to apply for tertiary entry in 2005 will need to have a range of preferences to maximize opportunities for entry.

I am available for appointments with students and parents to discuss tertiary entry in 2005. Please make an appointment through Mrs. Duncan in the Counselling Department.

VET News Update
Understanding the Australian Qualifications Framework

The Australian Qualifications Framework is a comprehensive framework for all nationally recognised qualifications in schools, vocational education and training, and higher education.

Students in Yr 11 & 12 Hospitality Studies and Yr 12 Technology Studies at this school have the opportunity, if all of the requirements of the qualification are completed, to gain a Certificate 1 or a Statement of Attainment for those parts that are successfully completed. This certificate or Statement of Attainment will be recognised in all eight States/Territories in Australia. This is because Australia now has a national qualifications framework called the Australian Quality Training Framework (AQTF). There are 12 different types of qualifications within the framework. These are shown in the diagram below. Those that are bolded are the ones where the opportunity exists to be either fully or partially completed through the VET programs being undertaken at this school. Opportunities to achieve Certificate II and III are through outside TAFE options and School-based Traineeship or Apprenticeships. In the future we would like to provide more opportunity for students at this school to undergo this type of pathway.

Why is it so important?
The Australian Qualifications Framework helps all learners, employers, and education and training providers to participate in and navigate the qualifications system. Under the framework, learners can start at the level of learning that suits them and then build up as their needs and interests develop and change over time. The framework assists learners to plan their career progressions regardless of their life stage or locations. In this way, its supports national standards in education and training, and encourages lifelong learning.

Urgent and Important
TAS swimming (at Chandler) is on Friday 19 March. Because of lightning and cyclonic conditions, we have lost quite a few Time Trial opportunities. Therefore, Age Championships and final Time Trials will be held this Friday morning at the School pool from 8.00am onwards. Bring your togs! Some individual and relay positions are yet to be determined.

Jnr TAS Swimming
Congratulations to all students who have been successful in being selected in the Junior TAS Swimming Team to compete at the annual carnival on Tuesday 16 March 2004 at The Southport School, Gold Coast. A team list has been posted on the window in F15 for all interested students.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all parents and staff for their assistance at training and time trials. I would like to congratulate all students involved in training and time trials on their excellent commitment and dedication to the sport. It is unfortunate that I am unable to take all students to the carnival and I hope that this does not cause disappointment for some. I hope to see everyone back at training again next year and I encourage current Year 7 students to continue swimming and trial again next year for the Senior TAS Swimming Team.

Congratulations
CONGRATULATIONS to Bryanna Childs (Yr7), Matthew Clanfield (Yr7) and Zackary Taylor (Yr6) on being selected in the Met North Regional Swimming Team to compete at the State Titles in Townsville from 24 - 26 March 2004. I wish Bryanna, Matthew and Zachary the best of luck at the Championships. Well done!
